It’s time to start planning for the annual Medicare open enrollment from October 15 to December 7, if you have Medicare this is when you can select your Medicare Plan for 2020.
“It’s important to know that if you’re eligible for Medicare, you need to elect your plan during the annual enrollment period. It’s crucial to know what you’re getting,” advises Jeff Hunsaker, Managed Care Sales Director for HealthTexas Medical Group. “Unless there are special circumstances, once you elect your plan, you are locked in to that plan for the entire year.”
He added that unless you have Medicare or Medicaid, it may be difficult to change plans after open enrollment period.
Secondly, for anyone moving to San Antonio or are becoming Medicare eligible, they can elect a plan immediately, Hunsaker notes. “They are not impacted by the open enrollment period or locked into a plan,” he said. “Also, people who become Medicare eligible because of a disability can enroll immediately.”

HealthTexas Medical Group primarily accepts United Healthcare Medicare Advantage Plans, Hunsaker explained. “There are products for people who have Traditional Medicare, Medicare and Medicaid, as well as Tricare for Life for military members or those with chronic illnesses,” he said.
Hunsaker wants new patients to know that the patient-physician relationship is a key aspect of HealthTexas’ mission, which is why a patient’s first appointment is with a physician. “Our doctors focus on preventive medicine,” he said. “We want to find out what’s causing you to get sick in the first place in order to keep you healthy and enhance your quality of life.”
HealthTexas Medical Group was established in 1994 by local physicians who recognized the need for primary care doctors to combine their passion, skills and resources to improve the health of the patients within the local community. Since then, HealthTexas has grown to include more than 60 healthcare providers in 16 primary care clinics in and around the San Antonio region all working toward that same goal.
